Green Paks – A fast way to own a green roof

E-mail Print

Green Paks are a fast and affordable way to own a green roof. They are changing the way such roofs are constructed, and are making these less expensive as well as easier to install. The product eliminates many problems typically associated with installing a green roof. Green Paks are self contained modules pre-packed with engineered soil; specifically formulated for rooftop plant growth; and can be stored for long periods of time prior to the start of a green roof project. They remain mobile after planting, allowing the modules to be easily moved if roof repairs or alterations become necessary. Each module covers 5.2 square feet of roof area. They are made from specially woven fabric knitted of high density polyethylene. Packaged as 42 modules per standard 48? x 42? pallet, 20 pallets per truck load, each pallet of Green Paks covers 218.4 square feet of roof area.

Eliminated is the need for dump truck loads of soil that are both difficult to hoist and to spread evenly across the rooftop. They can also be stored on the job-site indefinitely prior to installation and planting; and can be installed using a variety of manufactured geo-textile drainage products over any roofing material. Available with or without planting service, Green Paks allow landscape architects and contractors alike their space for artistic expression.

Nu-Lok Launches World’s First Solar Roofing System

Award-winning global roofing company Nu-lok Roofing Systems, has launched the world’s first fully integrated solar roofing system.

Traditional panels might require expensive and heavy fixing structures to attach them to the roof. This system from Nu-lok simply locks the panels into the existing battens to provide a safe power source, which seamlessly integrates into the existing roof.

Nu-lok’s existing patented fixing system - which replaces traditional wooden battens with a lightweight, galvanised steel grid system - combines with specially designed solar PV (photovoltaic) panels.

Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels work by converting solar energy into electricity. PV panels consist of one or two layers of a semi-conducting material, usually silicon. When light hits the solar PV panels on the roof, it creates an electrical field across the layers, thus generating electricity. This powers all appliances and lighting, much the way electricity from a mains supply does.

Nu-lok solar roof claims the following benefits:

• A dedicated, clean, safe power source
• Reduced electricity bills; and protection against rising energy costs
• Reduced carbon dioxide emissions; increased property value
• Minimal maintenance with long operational life
• No moving parts - silent operation Seamless integration with an existing roof

Not only is the environment set to benefit from an ongoing reduction in CO2 emissions, immediate financial savings are made by eliminating the need for expensive and unsightly support housings.

Nu-lok’s founder Bob Hick explains: “We were surprised to discover that people don’t realise the manufacture of support carriages for solar panels actually creates additional CO2 emissions. These emissions extend the time needed to obtain a positive return from your investment in solar panels.

“Nu-lok is pleased to offer a solar roofing solution that not only looks fantastic, but really does keep CO2 emissions to an absolute minimum,” Hick explained.

Nu-lok’s system doesn’t require any nails or screws, which means installation costs are significantly reduced and panels can be easily removed or replaced. Extra panels can also be simply added to increase the amount of electricity generated.

SARNAFIL’S EnergySmart Roof® system includes a white, highly reflective, lacquer coated surface that has proved it can reduce the amount of energy required to maintain comfort in an air-conditioned building by decreasing heat flow through the building envelope. A “cool roof” such as Sarnafil’s, can save money, improve occupant comfort, increase a roof’s longevity, and reliably protect a building and its contents.

Sarnafil was the first single-ply membrane manufacturer to label roofing products under the EPA’s

Energy Star Roof Products program in the USA. The program is a voluntary partnership between the EPA and a select group of roof product manufacturers. The focus of the program is to promote environmental and economic benefits of reflective roofing. As a Charter Partner of the program, Sarnafil’s EnergySmart Roof® has gained much attention in the media and wellknown research institutes.

Roof Software

THE Roof Wizard, a roof modelling, estimation and installation software is for professionals in the metal roofing business (architectural or structural metal roofing, strip, rib, standing seam, panel or corrugated). The Roof Wizard program not only quantifies all material for a metal roof, it also optimises the re-use of off-cut material for the roof and the trim. The program also calculates the labour and prints a complete set of reports including the quotation, order form, dimensioned roof drawing, pay claim form etc. all automatically.

Roof Wizard represents the latest and most powerful software currently available for roof modelling and estimating. The software features automatic roof modeling in full 3D, calculates all material and labour quantities, optimises sheet and off-cut usage and inserts information into any one of seven pre-defined reports.

Roof Wizards is also a breeze to learn. In fact one could be up and running after just a few hours, thanks to picture menus and text menus that use terms that one currently uses – no computer jargon. Roof Wizard allows the operator to try different options, and selects the best roof arrangement; it provides fast and accurate quotation; input is via simple point-and- click with a mouse; all forms are automatically filled and printed; graphical display for fast, accurate roof input.

The system allows the operator to setup definition files for all roofing materials from many manufacturers, estimated in the one simple system, total roof area, total length of ridge, hips, valleys and gable ends. All the variables are accounted for: sarking, caps, special finish, fixer’s rates etc. There are separate report forms for client, accounts, fixer and job supervisor.

Available are fully dimensioned 3D representation of any roof shape - multi-hips, skillion, gables, dormers, dutch gables, verandahs, atriums and two storey. All fixtures and fittings required by the roof plumber such as flashings, downpipes, clips and screws are also accounted for in the estimate.
